Can I get you guys opinion on clean technique?

I read somewhere that you shouldn't pull with the elbow. You should snap the hip and guide the bell into rack.

I have tried to clean this way but can not seem to not pull with the elbow, especially when using anything above a 20kg.

Am I doing it right or wrong?

Hi Peter, are you performing a hanging clean or a swinging clean? The movement should all be from the legs and hips. I notice a lot of people who have weightlifting backgrounds intially have trouble with cleans as they try to use their biceps and almost curl it into place. The arms should stay out of the movement except for guiding the bell into place, as you mention.

Do you have a video of yourself that you can post for us to take a look at?

Hi Howie

No video, I do have a weight lifting background as you mention though.

I perform the clean and press for reps so I guess its a swinging clean?

Hi,

Try to add in trap elevation and shoulder retraction simultaneously with the hip extension, especially with heavier bells. The only thing you want your elbow to be doing is finding your hip; the rest of the arm readying to "catch" the bell in the rack.

Hope this helps.

Pete:

Im with Kate on the trap engagment. Once I learned how to pull up with the traps while swinging up to the clean it makes jumping in weight so much easier

Had a go tonight at pulling with my traps and couldn't believe the difference!

The bell just flew up, thanks for the advice
